Fat girls on the beach

It can be hard to keep that in mind when you're being pointed at or bullied or told you are worthless. Over the space of the afternoon, 50 plus-size attendees came down to enjoy the beach and take part in group discussions on fatphobia. But the beach is a fraught place, where I risk judgment and discomfort. In Brazil, some people in favor of body positivity still cringe at the label gordo "fat" in Portuguese. Alas, I am pale as a ghost and I like hurling my body into the biggest waves I can find, so a glamorous, skimpy halter-neck will leave me sunburned and at risk of public exposure. Other people who would see me, judge me, giggle, point, sneer… all my worst fears.
